New Brunswick’s Population Growth Surges, But Will It Last?

According to the latest data from Statistics Canada, as of July 1, 2024, New Brunswick's population reached 854,355, marking a 2.7% increase from the previous year. The Fredericton-Oromocto economic region grew to 151,902 residents, an increase of 4,139, primarily due to a net gain of 3,621 international migrants. This growth rate is second only to the Moncton-Richibucto region, which saw a 4.3% rise, bringing its total population to 262,591.

While projections indicate that population growth in the province and the Fredericton area may slow due to evolving immigration policies, this could weaken economic expansion but may also help curb the overheated housing market. The recent surge highlights the region’s resilience, but sustaining growth will depend on employment opportunities, infrastructure, and the successful integration and retention of migrants.
