A day in Nackawic with the IGNITE Marketing Team

Are you looking for options to spend your weekend? We have a great place for you, and it is just 45 minutes west of Fredericton: Nackawic, Home of the World’s largest Axe.

Come with us on how our day went.

We kicked off our Friday morning with a drive to Nackawic, taking Route 102, which follows the waterfront of the St. John River. The views are simply breathtaking. We were amazed by its surroundings, which only got more impressive when we enter Nackawic.

World´s Largest Axe

When we arrived we were greeted by Mayor Tim Fox, who gave us a warm welcome and personally showed us the town’s iconic attraction—the World’s Largest Axe, all I can say is that it's amazing, with its 15m (49ft) in height and its 7m (23ft) wide, it stands as a proud symbol of the year when Nackawic was designated as the Forestry Capital of Canada (1991), symbolizing the importance of the forestry industry in Nackawic and throughout New Brunswick. And yes, the head of the axe contains a time capsule!

We stopped by to take pictures, watched the waterfront, listened to the birds, and enjoyed the moment in the peaceful atmosphere!

While chatting with the mayor, we also got a sneak peek at the upcoming Smallmouth Bass Open 2025—an annual beloved fishing tournament.
All the preparations were almost ready: the fishing bowl for weigh-ins was set, a large canopy area for gatherings, and the store cabin by the water, just behind the Nackawic Arena, was preparing its final touches for its grand opening.

We were ready for our next stop, the Nackawic Nature Trail. This 2.9 km trail is the perfect blend of nature and local history, the perfect path to enjoy nature, discover mini-cascades, or even a mini-lighthouse. It’s a trail full of history, we enjoyed the views accompanied by the sound of the river in the background and the trees gently blooming. It’s an ideal spot to reconnect with nature and each other.

After the hike, we were certainly ready to eat. We stopped at the Waterfront Pub & Eatery for a hearty Chicken BLT Sandwich with a Fix (Poutine). Comfort food at its best—simple, delicious, and just what we needed.

And because no trip is complete without a treat, we ended our visit at Maxed Out with a smoothie. I chose the Strawberry Cheesecake, and honestly—it hit the spot. Sweet, creamy, and the perfect way to close the day.

There’s something truly special about discovering the beauty and stories tucked in our communities and supporting local businesses while discovering all that NB has for us. From scenic river drives and historical landmarks to nature trails and cozy eats, Nackawic reminded us that unforgettable experiences only require little curiosity and an open heart.

So go ahead—take the drive, try something new, and let the road surprise you.

Stay tuned for more local spotlights as we continue exploring all that our region has to offer!
